Uh..this misinformation as i worked as a Maritime private security contractor. I worked innthat area for two years.
According to the ICC International Maritime Bureau (IMB), there wereΒ 120 incidents of maritime piracy and armed robbery against ships in 2023, up from 115 in 2022.Β However, the number of attacks has dropped significantly in the late 2010s after the UN led an international effort to combat Somali piracy.Β Between 2016 and 2022, the number of attacks on the Somali coast fell to eight.Β In 2022, IMB found 115 attacks, ranging from unarmed burglaries to gunpoint hijacks.Β From January through October 2023, there were 99 attacks, which is about the same as 2021.
Wow so people don't keep up on world events and just wrongly believe something that was true 10 years ago still is? You totally just wanted to call it racist but couldn't be that blunt about it
Because Somalis were actually hijacking ships, taking hostages, fighting off raids and destroyers from an interation joint task force, actually killing people etc, instead of stealing cargo from ships and running awaya like other small time "pirates", the somalis at their peak were responsible for almost all majore pirate attacks and cost the worlds shipping companies billions of dollars in lost property, ransoms, insurance hikes, and naval security operations, the fact is Somalis not only revived modern day piracy, but also inspired other pirates across the globe. They are without a doubt based, and take the title pirate.
Tell me you don't know ANYTHING about somali piracy without telling me, there is a suez canal wich 80% of ALL WORLD TRADE sails through. Somali pirates have been attacking merchant ships exponentially untill the piracy rate has been dropped to almost 0 by a coalition of different nations who patrolled that area with military ships. Because of that the "hunting grounds" of the somali pirates has been moved to indonesia. But since that is not in our operational waters and our merchant ships don't regularly go through there we don't sail there with military ships too..
And on top of that, our ships has long left the somali area due to the piracy there being almost eradicated.
This Somalia pirates propaganda is spread by EU , they want to justify EU loot of Somalia fish, its estimated Somalia looses over 200M dollar's worth of fish daily most of this is to EU
Except that you forget to emphasize how prevalent and frequent they were pre 2020. They obviously backed down a lot since then due to all the countermeasures. This is an ignorant perspective you are applying here.
I cant believe I actually LEARN something from a short. There is fresh youtube videos on Somalie pirates, I watch one of them. They never said that Somalia piracy was down. They just too good for medias with their riffle and crazy antics…
Welp, for me, speaking of modern day pirates the first ones that come into my mind are Malaccan strait pirates (the ones near Singapore and Malaysia in this Short).
(I think of Somali pirates too but the Malaccan strait ones come first π)
I think the real reason we became hyper-focused on Somali "pirates" was specifically to stigmatized them with a label associated with criminality. In reality they were fishermen who had their economic lively hood stripped from them by large faceless corporations. But no one thinks about that when they hear the term "Pirate". Always remember the Devil works hard but mainstream media works even harder when it comes to defending the capitalist hierarchy.
Or maybe because China does (most of the) illegal trade with eastern Africa and does not report the incidents when it happen, no? Alternatively, I'd love to hear how many modern pirates got into crypto and crypto scams.
